Description
JML Engineering was awarded a project with Lakehead Public Schools for renovations to Gorham and Ware School in Gorham, Ontario. The renovation consisted of exterior wall upgrades, mechanical upgrades and design of a large entrance canopy.
The entrance canopy was a large structure that was required to tie into the existing wood and steel framed structure and extend beyond the existing entrance to enhance safety. The new canopy was constructed of pre-engineered wood trusses, dimensional lumber and structural steel with exterior concrete support columns on reinforced concrete footings. Design loads included basic roof snow load, snow accumulation loads and unbalanced snow loads. A new sidewalk was also constructed.
Exterior renovations included new wall systems on the front portion of the school as well as other various upgrades.
Mechanical renovations consisted of new mechanical units, controls systems and associated electrical.
JML Engineering was the Prime Consultant for this project and completed extensive field investigations inside the existing attic, detailed design of the canopy and completed periodic inspections during construction. The exterior wall systems and mechanical system upgrades were completed by sub-consultants.
