Rehabilitation of the Marina Park Pedestrian Overpass

Rehabilitation of the Marina Park Pedestrian Overpass

Description

JML Engineering was awarded the Rehabilitation of the Marina Park Overpass from the City of Thunder Bay in May of 2016. The scope of work for the project included a detailed structural inspection, rehabilitation design, tendering and contract administration services.

The Marina Park Pedestrian Overpass was constructed in the mid-1990 and consists a hollow structural steel (HSS) structural truss, with a reinforced concrete deck on concrete piers.

The Detailed Structural Inspection was done in accordance with the Ontario Structure Inspection Manual (OSIM) to provide a assessment of all structural elements. The structural inspection required temporary traffic control, the use of mobile elevating work platforms and rail track closures. Non-destructive testing of the hollow structural steel elements was also completed by a sub-consultant.

A tender package was completed based on the work plan of removing the superstructures and placing them in a temporary work area located in a City owned parking lot below the west end of the structure. The superstructure was removed in two sections and placed on cribbing to allow for easy access for welding and painting without working over live traffic and an active rail corridor.

Once all repairs were complete the two superstructure sections were re-installed onto the concrete piers, a new concrete deck was poured, miscellaneous sidewalk/handrail repairs completed and the crossing re-opened to the public.
